Caramel Apple Butter Gooey Bars

These apple candy bars are fantastically sticky, rich and easy to make with an irresistible apple butter filling and a buttery caramel drizzle.

Ingredients

FOR THE CROSS:
1 box of spice cake mix
1 egg
1/2 cup (1 stick) melted butter

FOR FILLING AND DRIZZLE:
1 (8 oz pkg) cream cheese at room temperature
1 cup homemade or prepared apple butter
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons of apple pie spices
3 eggs
1 (16 oz. box) powdered sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) melted butter
Caramel sauce or dulce de leche is recommended for drizzling.

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 13×9″ baking tray with aluminum foil, spreading the sides of the foil over the edges of the tray. Spray aluminum foil with cooking spray and set aside.
In a large bowl, combine spice cake mix, egg and melted butter until a thick dough is formed. Press dough evenly into prepared pan; set aside.
In bowl of stand mixer, spread cream cheese, apple butter and brown sugar until smooth, about 1 minute. Add vanilla extract, apple pie seasoning and eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add to the box of powdered sugar, mixing well, followed by the melted butter. Beat until blended.
Pour the apple butter filling over the crust and bake for approximately 35-45 minutes or until almost done. The center will move slightly, okay, as it will continue to set as it cools. If the center is splashing, bake for a little longer using 5 minute increments.
Cool the bars completely, then refrigerate them for at least 2-3 hours or until they settle. Cut into bars and sprinkle with caramel sauce or dulce de leche before serving.
