Fried Apple Rings

Ingredients

A big apple… I recommend Grandma Smith.
1/2 cup of flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup of buttermilk
frying oil, about 1/4- 1/2 inch deep in your pot
Optional dressings: sugar, cinnamon and powdered sugar, caramel sauce, ice cream, syrup, etc.

Instructions

Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a wide pot. Mix all dough ingredients in a medium bowl with a fork. Pit the apple, peel it and then cut it into thin slices. A large apple should produce about 10-12 slices.
Dip the apple slices into the dough, using a fork to turn it over and cover both sides. Carefully place the apple slice in the hot oil and fry it until golden on one side. Turn the apple over with a slotted spoon and cook it on the other side. Cook quickly, about 20-40 seconds on each side.
Remove the apples with the slotted spoon and let them drain on a paper towel for one minute before serving.
Serve the apple slices fried and hot with powdered sugar, or cinnamon and sugar, or syrup. For a richer dessert, try them with a scoop of ice cream and/or a caramel sauce.
