Grieving Man Goes To Shelter And Adopts All The Dogs No One Else Wants

When Steve Greig lost one of his beloved dogs, he was inconsolable. In his grief, he decided to take a trip to his local animal shelter.

There, he first met Eeyore after he asked the staff to give him the dog that no one wanted. That is when they presented him with Eeyore, the 12-year-old senior Chihuahua.

“So (I adopted) a 12-year-old Chihuahua (named Eeyore) with a heart murmur and four bad knees, and I brought him home, and that was just the beginning of all the animals,” Steve told the Dodo.

Steve comes from a background of animal lovers, so he was always surrounded by pets. And he was used to the responsibility of caring for animals, as well enjoys doing it. Since he took home Eeyore, he hasn’t stopped adopting unwanted senior dogs, who now total 9. And he’s even taking in a rabbit, chicken and pig.

“I’m upfront about all the dogs when guests come to the house. But I keep the pig secret for an element of surprise,” he posted.

The all live together in his home as one big happy family. Steve doesn’t mind waking up at 5 am in order to make each of them their special diets. He makes up all the different meals and administers medications.

Afterwards, he heads to work as an accountant. On his lunch breaks he is able to come home to take care of the animals before gong back to work. Then in the evening time when he’s home it’s meal time again, plus a walk. Walks for these guys usually involves pulling a cart for some of the dogs while the others walk on a leash. At the end of the day bedtime means they all cuddle together, with a few of the crew sleeping on the floor in their own beds for safety reasons.

The pig, named Bikini, has come to believe that she’s one of the dogs and often hangs out with them. Stuart the rabbit and Betty the chicken also appear often in pictures with the senior dogs on their Instagram page.

All around the world, there are people following this unique family for pictures and updates. Steve not only takes in and cares for unwanted animals, but he also helps out with Maxfund Rescue Group in Denver in order find homes for senior dogs. He often features them on his family’s Instagram, hoping that perhaps a follower will want to adopt them.

Steve loves senior animals and has said, “They’re just wiser animals. You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age. These dogs know who they are and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are.”
